Just a quick question...
when an ipod eventually dies from use... for example the battery just won't hold a charge... is it possible to still plug it in and retrieve all of the music on the hard drive??
Thanks.

The battery is not the ipod. Just replace the dead battery.
But to answer your question, yes -- most likely. Unless your ipod's battery is utterly, completely wasted, plugging the ipod into your Mac should still be able to mount it (enable disk use), upon which you may then use any of the several softwares to access the hidden music folder. Go to macupdate.com or versiontracker.com and search for them.

A dead battery isn't a problem as there are replacment batteries available. A dead hard disk is a problem and it will take all of your music with it. Of course, all of your music should be in your iTunes library, right?

Good Luck..
if u plan on dumping it .. pu in a new battery and give it to family =)
then get a new upgraded one. that's what i plan on doing. giving it to my bro if he covers the cost of a battery. i'd get the new one =P

It is easy to replace the battery. There are a number of 3rd party solutions for doing so. However, if you decide to get rid of it you can sell it for a fair bit; just search ebay for "broken ipod" to see what I mean. If you want to sell it, but not on eaby, I would be intreasted, but I can't offer as much as you would get on ebay.

awesome, and not hard to replace

Just did the same thing with a 1g 5gb. 20+ hours without a recharge. $40. Not bad at all.
