I recently bought my wife an iPod mini for her birthday. I set up a seperate user account for her with access to my music library (on an external FW disk). Everything seemed to be working smoothly. From her account, she was able to transfer songs, etc.
At some point, everything went wrong. My computer (my account) stopped recognizing in iPod, even in FW Disk mode. The player works fine, but no combination of resetting would allow the iPod to mount on my Mac. I've tried other Macs and other cables...they don't work either.
The only thing that recognizes my iPod is my work PC (via a USB2 cable). I decided to experiment and reformat it for PC using the Apple software. That seemed to work fine. I'm hoping that when I get home, I can reformat it for the Mac (assuming it mounts).
Does anyone have any tips or help on this subject? My wife's iPod mini still works fine.

Did this happen after you updated to 10.3.6 by any chance?

Yes, it did. Is there any remedy?

Not that I've heard. This seems to be a pretty widespread problem, though.
I've held off on updating just for this reason. The bug seems to have bitten lots of external firewire drives, including iPods.

While it may be a problem, I'm not sure I'd call it "widespread." It hasn't affected my iPod nor external drive.

I am getting SO annoyed with Apple. My iBook's battery died shortly after upgrading to 10.3.5, and now this! People made fun of all the problems with Windows XP Service pack 2, but Apple doesn't seem too much better ...

Sounds like your Firewire interface is shot. It happens. In warranty?

Update to the latest iPod firmware update. I was having trouble with my iPod but not my Mini or my g/f's Mini. The software update fixed all problems and upgraded the Mini software to 4G. Good stuff.

I'll have to check on the warranty. It still charges through firewire, if that's any indication of whether or not the FW still works...

It is possible that the data channel is dead while the power channel still functions correctly. This is what happened to my first iPod.
