I am currently organising Christmas presents for myself
I am evaluating what 2.1 speakers should I get for my Mac.
Currently I'm looking at the following:
Logitech X-230
Logitecg Z-3e
Logitech Z-2300
JBL Creature II
Bose Companion 3
I am not looking at the 5.1 speaker systems unless someone can convience be that it's cost the same it gives me a better experience (and I don't use my Mac often enough to watch DVD).
Can someone who has any of the above tell me about your experience?
Another thing I am looking at is whether it's easy for any of the above system be used for any other source i.e. on a CD-player, and PlayStation 2.
Also, is that any software I need to install on my Mac (hope not)?

The Logitech z2300 would be my choice out of that listing, with the bose system as a close second (for the price anyway). The bose system does match the powerbook/g5 tower very nicely and they deliver very nice sound (as do the logitechs). I'm not sure how easy it would be to use the the system with your PS2. I know if you opt for the top of the line logitech 5.1 system the controller pod has a bunch of inputs so that you could keep the ps2 and mac connected at all times. PS2s have an optical out right on the back of the console so there's nothing extra to purhcase besides an optical cable in whatever length you need. The top of the line system that i"m refering to is the z5500 (replaced the z680) a little while ago. You can get them at newegg for under $300 and they would definitely be my choice!

Well, I don't need to connect with PS2 and Mac both at the same time (in fact I would say I would only connect it to my PS2 occassionly). Unfortunately I cannot get anything from newegg.com as they don't ship internationally (yes, I know there are firms which can provide me US addresses and then repack and send over to me to Australia etc).

I personally have the Sirocco Spirit 2.0 speakers from Videologic, which are excellent, and around the prices you are mentioning. www.videologic.com now however goes to a page about DAB radio, so I don't know if they are still made. Anyhow, while they are fairly boring black boxes, they are well built and the reviews received show them to have better sound quailty than almost anything else in the market.

Scooters are more fun than computers and only slightly more frustrating

Klipsch only sells professional speakers in Australia :-( Not 2.1 speaker for computer use.

I have to give a thumbs up for the Logitech X-230's. I was originally looking at buying the creatures, when I went to listen to some I was extremely disappointed.
The logitechs have amazing bass ability. I have my sub on as low as it goes and it still thumps the floor. The sounds is crisp and clear, even at high volumes.
And for the price, £40 over here. Much better value than the creatures, in my extemely humble opinion.
Phil.
