Asteroid (Q97)

The analog FireWire audio device, the first product of its recently created iPod division, will allow users to directly record audio using any Mac and Apple’s GarageBand music studio application. According to reputable sources, the company is on track to begin manufacturing the device overseas next month.

The device, code-named 'Q97' or 'Asteroid,' has been under development at the company for the better part of the year. Typically referred to as a 'breakout box' in the music recording industry, the external audio device attaches to a computer and offers audio inputs and outputs for attaching instruments or other audio sources.

nice
seriously, if this comes out, it will be sweet. i've been looking for for an firewire audio interface, and as the article stated, the price of the m-audio firewire 410 is just a tad too much, as are the higher end interfaces like MOTU's. and the usb audio breakout boxes out there just don't do it for me.

The article claims that it'll add $3 million in profit per quarter. Yeah, um, that's a million bucks in profit per month. Assuming an extremely unlikely profit margin of 85% (based on a sale price of $130), that's still assuming they sold 9050 units per month. Assuming a more realistic profit margin of 50%, they'd have to sell 15,400 units per month. I don't think either of those numbers is anywhere near realistic, considering the comparatively small number of people who actually make music on their Macs. (It's certainly lower than the number who make home videos, and FAR lower than the general Mac population.)

I just think those numbers don't look right.

O'Grady's Powerpage has another concept drawing (the page looks to be down at the moment), and it is quite different than the one above. The appleinsider drawing looks more like something Apple would make. Either way, I'd definitely be interested in this item if it is as low-priced as web sites are speculating it will be.

Maybe, but 10000+ units a month isn't really a huge number. Apple sells over 80 times as many Macs per quarter. ie. They'd only need maybe 1.3% of new Mac owners buying one of these, and it'd be well over 10000 units per quarter. And that's not counting the bazillion people who already own Macs.

Yeah but O'Grady's is the same same site making up all the weird G5 stories. Anyways here are their pictures:

AppleInsider: Apple confirms 'Asteroid' project with GarageBand distribution

Nestled deep within the contents package of Apple's new GarageBand 2.0 software, -- currently shipping with most of Apple's computers -- is a single image file named 'asteroid.tiff.' Unfortunately, the file is incomplete or improperly encoded, and therefore will not display properly. Nevertheless, it's present and clearly labeled.
