I bought one of the 4X DVD +/- RW drives from MegaMacs last week, and it won't recognize any media. I've tried it all, too. Won't even recognize a commercial disk, DVD or otherwise. Doesn't work with Windows XP, either.

OK, so it's DOA, basically. What's troubling is that I contacted MegaMacs, and they say that they won't exchange it until Fantom declares it dead. I've seen this with components that worked, and then died, but never with something that was useless out of the freaking box.

I've never had any trouble from MegaMacs before, but I'm starting to wonder about them.

We'll see how it turns out.

Here in the UK at least, If I had the same problem, I'd point out that my contract is with the vendor and not the component maker, and so it is their problem to rectify the problem. I'd be suprised if US consumer law is so very different on this point.

We'll see what happens this week, after going around and around for several tries.

Well, I sent it back last week, but I have yet to find out what's going on. MegaMacs explained that they didn't have replacement stock, so my only choice was to send it to Fantom. We'll see what happens.

Fantom tech guys called me on Thursday to walk through the issues, but they couldn't find anything wrong with the drive. They were using XP, and I tried XP, but they had yet to hook the drive to Jaguar to check that. Thank goodness I rememberd the versions of everything on the machines that I used to check the drives.

Anyhow, it's still pending.

Got it back last week, still no joy. The folks at Fantom were nice enough, and I'm sure they did what they could, but it's DOA for Mac. I haven't tested it in XP, like they did, because that's useless to me anyway.

Case looks good, and works fine, but the Toshiba drive is useless.

I hope this helps someone else avoid a ripoff.
