I have a 733 mhz G4, which is unfortunately the last G4 that doesn't support drives larger than 137 GB. I found a great deal on a 160 GB drive, so I was wondering if I could put this drive in my G4 and just live withouth that little bit of space. Would the computer recognize it and would to drive run corruption free?

Would partitioning it work?

But other than that it would run fine. 160 Gig drives probably only have 140 usable anyway so you aren't losing much.

You can indeed safely use it as a 137GB drive. Partitioning will not work, because it is a limitation of the controller chip, not the filesystem.

Do Oxford 911 chipsets in Firewire enclosures guarantee compatibility with sizes over 137 GB? Or is it a different part of the chipset?

No, a 911 chip doesn't. I guess there must be different revisions of that chip, cuz some do support large drives, earlier ones don't.
