i just got a new/refreshed iPod because my old one died. I was wondering what is the best way to keep the longest battery life? Should i just plug it into my machine via Firewire and let it charge while I transfer songs? Or should I just charge it first then plug it into the machine to transfer songs?

From the iPod Battery FAQ:

Lithium ion batteries do not take kindly to frequent full or complete discharges. When possible, the optimal usage pattern - for any lithium ion battery - is a partial discharge, followed by recharging.
