Hey all, I'm in the market for a digital camera and am really considering the Canon S500 for about $315 brand new. My question is if there are any other cameras that are comparable to this particular model or if something else has great band for the buck. Basically I'm lookin for a camera I could take around with me when hanging with friends to capture those funny moments everyone always wishes they had a camera for, and still useable in some design projects in school (nothing serious I got a cuz pro digi cam for that). Maybe the S410, Sony Cybershot's, anything?

i'd recommend the s410 if you dont need the crop.
i'd recommend the sd200/300 if you want something smaller, 2inch lcd instead of 1.5, faster focus and faster camera operations in general, and a great movie mode (finally).
BUT, you sacrifice some image quality compared to the s410. some say corner softness and purple fringing, but i dont notice the corner softness. purple fringing i notice, but in my shots they dont seem to be a big deal.

I was considering the S410 but I think the S500 has manuel mode where as the S410 doesn't, but I don't know this for sure, just going off of some internet reviews.

Well with no help from here, I ended up getting the S500 today for $300, not too shabby. Check out dell and use coupon number 5428XSZD7KDGFM to get more off of what they already reduce when you add it to your cart. Good luck and I can't wait till I get my camera in three days.

congrats, you konw about the dell coupon thing.
i dont think the s500 has manual controls .. i'm 99 percent sure it doesnt.
as far as i know, it is identical to the s410 except megapixel count.
5 instead of 4 on the same size sensor.
in my photo forums, people say the s410 takes better pictures, with less noise. just a thought.
the s class replacements (replacing the s410 and s500) will be coming in february .. that's just a rumor but seems pretty likely.
enjoy your camera =)

Thanks Lancer, I read that I could control the shutter speed, ISO speed, and it has a few Fstops I could control too and that's really all I wanted. I don't think the s410 had those features but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. I should've waited but $350 total for the S500 is a pretty good bargain in my book, and enough to keep me happy till the end of next year. Thanks again for your help.
