Hello all,
Today I decided to purchase an Ipod. I went with the Ipod Photo 40GB. So far I love it.
I have some of my music files on my Pc, and some on my powerbook. Now I was under the impression that I could sync songs between the two, if not, at least be able to throw all my PC Songs onto the ipod, and all my mac songs onto the ipod, and just have it not overwrite the same songs.
Well after reading the manual it says that if you want to switch off between using the Ipod between the Mac and the Pc you cannot do it without erasing all data off of the ipod. This just seem's weird to me that you would not be able to take songs off of a PC, and off of a Mac, without erasing EVERYTHING off of the ipod.
Does anyone have some recommendations on what I should to be able to use the ipod between the Pc and the Powerbook.
Thank you,
Jason

enable your iPod for Disk Usage. Copy them from the pc to the iPod and then the iPod to your iTunes library on the Mac.

wait wait wait. slow down there speedy. hang on, so when you take your PC formatted ipod and hook it up to your mac it works in itunes (as in you can play music and see all of the music you uploaded)?
but then you say you can't take music out of the ipod and put it in the library? that's because NOBODY can. don't know why, but you can't. it sucks.
can you add songs from your mac to the iPod using iTunes?
i haven't played with a WIN formatted iPod on a mac, but do utilities like iPodRip and Pod works work?

Yes, When I put my Pc formatted ipod and hook it up to the mac, it wworks in itunes. I can play the musica nd see it uploaded.
But I cannt take the music off of the ipod and put int the library.
Yes I can add songs from the mac to the ipod.
I guess the easiest way to solve this is to put all my PC Songs onto the Mac, and use the mac as the "central music location" for the ipod i guess. The thing that boggles me is the fact that I cant use the ipod to transfer the songs from the Pc To the Mac, that just seems stupid that it would be able to do that. Maybe I am just doing something wrong.
I dont have a cd burner on the PC, and it takes days trying to send it to the PC over lan. Maybe It will work with firewire, lasttime I tried I got a bluescreen of death lol. ><

Why does that seem stupid? If that were possible, it would be possible for anyone to just hook up an iPod to their computer and copy all the music onto their own machine, effectively making the iPod a piracy device in the public's eye. Not only would this not sit well with manufacturers, but Apple surely would have had some difficultly selling the music store to the record labels.
Of course this functionality would be easy for Apple to implement. One individual developer did add the functionality but Apple later released an update to iTunes that blocked it.
If you are looking to just transfer your music files from your PC to your mac, simply open iTunes on the PC, delete all your songs off your iPod, then copy the songs using windows explorer onto the iPod in disk mode, not with iTunes. Then open the iPod as an external drive on your mac and using the finder take the songs from the iPod HD and add them into iTunes. Once they are in iTunes, restore the iPod and then use iTunes on your mac to copy the music back onto the iPod using the database.
If you do not care about using third party software, there are plenty of utilities that will allow to just take the music from your iPod off and place them on your computer. Some of them even tote iTunes integration, but none of them will work as efficiently as you are hoping for.
