As part of a graduation gift, I am allowed to pick out a PDA phone and was wondering what people think of the Treo 600 with the Mac (on Cingular btw).
Thanks

Since you're on Cingular, you can't currently get a Treo 650, so you have to get the 600. I really like mine. Definately get Internet access from Cingular if you want the Treo to be of any use. The Treo works Ok with the Mac, but I recommend The Missing Sync for the best experience.

palmone.com sells an "unlocked" GSM treo 600 for 479. Will this work with my currently existing Cingular account and SIM card? What do I do to set it up after I order this?

Yes it would. But the unlocked Treos are going for about $325-350 on eBay right now, new with warranty.
I love my Treo 600!

Your SIM card stores all of the setup information... besides the phonebook memory, that is the essential function of the SIM card.
Insert the SIM card and turn Wireless Mode On. The Treo will take care of the rest for you

Yeah do the firmware update as first thing if it isn't already the latest version.
Some of my favorite software:
HandyShopper - Free list manager
vindigo - Local city information
Metr0 - Subway/bus routes (free)
SplashMoney - comes on the CD -- money management software
qset - Improves camera quality by turning down JPEG compression (free)
Soundrec - Allows you to record sound clips (free)
FileZ - Freeware file manager
There are many more extensive lists, like here:

Enjoy your Treo!

This is why I will always use a GSM phone instead of CDMA like what Sprint/Verizon uses. As far as T-Mobile is concerned, they probably still think I'm using the cheapie Nokia I got 3 years ago with them. I've used three phones since then without requiring any action on their part.

Well, they could tell what kind of phone you are using because the phone registers its IMEI number on the network. (That's how stolen phones get blocked.) The IMEI number can tell the network what kind of phone you are using.
