Well, I've seen some hacks already out for attempting to tunnel comms. for the little thing, but I'm thinking, "Hmm... wireless 802.11 (almost) standard...PIM apps.. Mac OS X... syncing?" Damn, would that not be the cheapest, and coolest little PDA ever? Somebody, please!
Bust out some hacks, kiddies!

first of all it would have to have custom pda like software on a ds cartridge. Other than that no hacks would really be needed.

Surely, there will be cool grown-up apps for the DS? (Yeah, I know, it's a game console, but still...)

Pretty doubtful. They'd have to be cartridge based, and I think anyone that wants a PDA probably has a PDA.

If we were talking about the Sony PSP, all that you have mentioned has already been accomplished.

Except that it lacks a touchscreen, so it is for all intents and purposes, useless.

For about the same price you could have a REAL palm PDA with thousands of apps.

Very little PDA software is cartridge based. None, that I know of. There's still some that comes on memory cards, but it's generally also available to be installed on the unit. Ever installed software on a PDA?

a memory card is in my opinion a cartridge, as it contains something in a hard plastic shell.

The question was about what was possible, vs. what is not. At least, let me clarify now if it wasn't clear.

That's nice. Only a small percentage of PDA software is sold that way. It's not a good argument for trying to change a Nintendo into a PDA.

I have no doubt that at least some PDA funcionality will be added at some point. There is already a GBA cartridge that accepts SD memory cards and can decode mpeg audio and video. Of course no one will buy a DS as a PDA, but it'll be a nice little extra when there are programs like that available.

...and, are there PIM apps for the PSP? because if they are, hopefully they'll be in basic standard file formats (e.g., .ics, .vcard, etc.). Then, my dollars may just go that direction. Entertainment functionality is nice at sub $150 levels, also.
