I'm anxiously awaiting the Fed Ex delivery of my wife's Christmas iPod. She has a condition called retinitis pigmentosa which makes it pretty much impossible to read small lcds and low contrast things. I am still amazed by her abilty to work as a software engineer and sometimes bewildered in trying to understand what she can and cannot see. She loves music and i think this will be a good gift. She also has expressed interest in audiobooks. Are iPods pretty easy to do by touch? I know she won't be able to read the menus so I'm hoping it is fairly intuitive to learn. Any experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays!

Honestly, an iPod photo would be better. Brighter screen, colors and the new font makes things much more readable.

If her condition is as you described, I think a iPod will be difficult for her to use. I'd compare my 2nd and 3rd generation iPods to reading a digital watch. The only audible cue is the optional click as you move from one item to the next.
If she keeps the number of items low, or memorizes playlist position, she could probably use it, but I don't think it will be ideal.

So it WILL be ideal! He'll get a new iPod for Christmas! What a jolly time of year!
It's in his first sentence:

He wouldnt be so anxious if he knew for sure that she couldn't read that display. Since he doesn't know for sure, there's a slight chance she might keep it.

When the wifey decides to keep the iPod, he'll yell "But you can't even see the screen!!!"

Thanks for your replies, I guess. I'm certain she won't be able to read the lcd. An iPod photo wouldn't help either. I'm counting on her memorizing or quickly being able to navigate and preview songs. No, I don't want it for myself either.

If she numbers her playlists, she should be able to count the clicks. Something to think about.

Agreed. You cold always menu to the music with just the audiable tones, with a little practice. Playlist selection may be hard. Keep it simply I guess. I hope you got her the Mini. 20 gigs of songs is alot to fumble through. Good luck...

I hope everyone's holidays went well. FedEx came through. She loved it. So far there does seem to be a bit of a learning curve, but I think she's enjoying it. She seems somewhat inseparable from it at the moment. On the downside, selections from audible.com seem quite expensive. I would have thought them to be cheaper, given the reduced physical publishing costs. It it the audio production we're paying for or is it a built in bootleg loss recovery fee?

Audiobooks are expensive. Not only are you buying the book (the contents, anyway), but you're also paying for the production costs of making it audible. Compare it to full priced books and audio books on CD, and it's not out of line.
If you'd like to make your own, check out CDs from the library and convert them to audiobook format.
