I just convinced my father to switch from pc to mac, but, while still using his pc, we are having printing problems.
Stats:
imac g5 500Ram
160 gg drive
20 inch screen
airport extreme card
using
Linksys wrt54gs
hp 5550 deskjet
running xp on the pc
we have-
1- downloaded latest drivers for hp on the mac
2- turned on printer sharing in system preferences
3- turned windows sharing
4- when selecting the printer set, we "turned on" smb (we read somewhere to try that
Now we are stumped...the error says
"Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds... ERRR: Connection failed with error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
ANY HELP PLEEEEEZ!!!!

2 and 3 need to be switched on on the PC, not the Mac, if that's where the printer is connected.
The PC needs to be sharing the printer. (Not sure Windows Sharing needs to be on, but if it does, that is SMB, I believe.)

Is there a firewall running on the PC (e. g. ZoneAlarm). I cannot access anything (PC-PC, Mac-PC, it's all the same).
If so, turn it off and try again.
If that doesn't work, remove your printer from the Print Center. Then add it again -- if you can see and add it, your computers can see each other. If they can see each other, but not print, I'll give you some more instructions later on.

We'll try turning off the zone alarm, then try to reload the printer. he only other problem we think could be the cause is, we've tried to look for the hp driver (deskjet5550 for our mac) but, either the downloads we find are too old and the links don't work, or, the one we downloaded from hp and installed, didn;t have that model whren we treied to add it to our printer list.
any suggestions???
we'll report again soonm.
THANKS

These guys haven't pointed you in the right direction. Here's what you need: http://lists.apple.com/archives/prin.../msg00167.html
Windows printer via SAMBA. If you want to print to a shared printer
connected to a Windows XP computer try these instructions (this
procedure has not been thoroughly tested):
1. Open the Print Center utility (located in /Applications/Utilities/ ).
2. Hold down the option key on your keyboard and either click on the
Add button in the Print Center toolbar or select Add printer... from
the Printers menu. A new sheet will open.
3. In the sheet click on the top popup menu and select Advanced from
the very bottom of the list.
4. Next, click on the Device: popup menu and select Windows Printer via
SAMBA .
5. In the Device Name: field enter a descriptive name for this printer.
6. In the Device URI: field enter the device URI in the following form:
smb://winuser assword@workgroup/server/printer
winuser
XP login name
password
XP login password
workgroup
XP workgroup name
server
Computer name of the XP machine
printer
Share name of the shared XP printer
7. Finally, click on the Printer Model popup menu and select the
manufacturer for your printer, and in the small window at the bottom
of the sheet select the PPD file for your printer model. It's important
that you select the correct PPD file, and the names are not overly
descriptive, but if you match your printer model number with the number
in the PPD file name you should be OK.
8. Click Add .
9. Print a test page.
That procedure has always worked for me. Not very many things'll will be this difficult in the future. Enjoy!

Thanks again for your help... best we've had so far. but... we are still not sure if we're doing this right...
can you look this over?
smb://Jack Moncrief:luke108@MSHOME/JaxNew306/hp deskjet 5550 series (2)
here's our concerns:
1- is this case sensitive
2- spaces, are they needed or should we use "_"
3-should server be "wireless router" or "pc name" (e.g., "JaxNew306" is the pc name when you look on the pc at "sytem properties-computer name")
4- this is a little lengthly one, but here it goes. When we dowloaded the HP 5550 driver for the mac, everything we read/researched told us to use the "deskjet 900 series", so, we are wondering if that could still be any partof the problem?
You've been an excellent source of information, and, we hope to see your response soon!
Zac and Jack
