Is that a bad thing because the e398 sounds like a great phone.

It's OK, I used one for a bit, they're kinda slow, the address book sucks like all moto phones, and the interface is just generally weird. And they don't support 850 MHz. Well I guess we'll have to wait and see...

I think that it looks great in black. If the Apple version doesn't support 850 MHz I won't touch it.

In the article MacNN's homepage links to, they say that the phone on which the demonstration was given was NOT the actualy "iPhone" that will be released. Instead, it was an e398 equiped with iTunes in order to demonstrate how the product would work.

It'll probably be white or aluminum... let's hope for the later!

Well, like everything apple, we'll just have to wait and see. Yep, that was itunes running on a e398 since they weren't about to show the apple/moto phone just yet. I forgot where I read this but I remember seeing a blurb about it (THE phone) possibly having a small touch sensitive scroll wheel. Again, we'll just wait and see. Too bad macworld isn't being broadcast over the internet. What is the reason for this again?

Sounds sweet to me. pretty much if it supports 850MHz and is not a flip phone I am sold.

If this is true then it seems like it might be possible to run iTunes on more than just the iTunes-branded phones.

The more rumors I hear about this, the more I think it's really just a phone that can play iTMS songs. Big Deal.
I was really hoping for a more "apple-design" phone - but it seems that won't happen. I have an iPod for playing music. Until there's a 20Gb drive in my cell phone, it seems I'll be carrying both anyway - so I guess my search for a phone continues (currently using the siemens s56)

For me it is a BIG deal. I currently have a 15 Gig iPod for a year and a half. I love it but I will sell it the day Apple comes out with an iPhone.
When I first bought the iPod I got a 15 gig one because I thought I would want every song I have with me all the time. I was very wrong. Turns out I only want to listen to about 20% of them while out of the house, so I constantly have to shuffle and skip songs.
When I leave for work in the morning with my iPod I have to think about weather or not I will be going out after as I don't want to have a heavy 15 gig iPod on me the whole night as I don't really have a free pocket and it is worth too much to lose.
On the other hand I will never leave my house without my cellphone as it is small and a necessity.
Now if I could have a inexpensive, small, cellphone that had removable media and I could stick a 1 gig chip in it, have it sync with iTunes I would the happiest person on the planet.
I was thinking about getting a iPod Mini but this phone idea is even better for me. If Apple doesn't come out with one soon I am going to get one of the Motorola ones with the iTunes interface as they are coming out with MANY this year.

I agree with C3PO's head...
right now, I'm using a Mot V3 Raz which is so SLICK esp with the powerbook. But if apple released a phone with basic PIM functions that synced with iCal, addressbook etc and was a flash based iPod... I'd take it! Bonus for bluetooth, quadband (at least 850mhz) and EDGE (GSM only) is killer!! Then I can use it as a BT modem for my powerbook like I can with the razr! But that's asking for too much now! I wonder what tomorrow will bring...

... But if apple released a phone...
Yes, but, Apple doesn't seem to be releasing a phone. It looks like it'll be a (current?) Motorola phone with Apple software. That's great and all, but I was hoping for an Apple-designed phone. You know: "Designed by Apple in California."
I like the points made about convenience of merging the two... but what really got me hyped was the thought of an Apple-designed phone; hardware-wise.

an iPhone would be. It would be Motorola guts with an Apple design. Kinda like the soundsticks.

Right,
But everything I've read (and, agreed, it's almost all speculation), has it the other way around: Apple SW inside Motorola HW. Not Motorola SW inside Apple HW.

Apple cannot make cell hardware, what do they know about it that the market leaders do not? What Apple can do is write software and design the thing, but the guts will still be Motorola.
Also what you have read was just phones that are coming out from Motorola that have iTunes compatibility. They have a ton of them coming.

Oh, I'm sure Apple could come up with something new and distinctive if they threw their design powerhouse at building a cell.
But yeah, that's why they're with Motorola anyway - to build on their knowledge and connections (no pun intended). I just hope the actual HW is more Apple-inspired down the road than what's rolling out in the near future.

I do agree with you - I would love it, but I'd prefer an apple industrial design to a motorola. I'd also be concerned by the battery life of cell and music use....

Whelp- no "iPhone" announced. I guess I'll see if Motorola dishes up something cool, but I don't have my hopes up.
