Is it possible to physically distinguish a USB 2.0 cable from a USB 1.1 cable by visual comparison?

Well, a USB 2 cable will have the USB 2 High Speed logo on it in place of the regular one.

That said, I don't actually believe there's any difference whatsoever in the cables.

Well, comparing the logos on what I believe to be a USB 2.0 cable to another cable I think is USB 1.1, I can't see any difference.

If I can't tell the cables apart physically, could I test them in actual usage and somehow determine the maximum speed of each? If one of them reaches 12Mbps, I'll know it's USB 2.0, won't I?

USB 2.0's max speed is 480Mbps. 12Mbps is actually USB 1.1's max speed.

With that said, I agree with Tooki - I do not believe there is any difference between "1.1" cables and "2.0" cables. They are interchangeable.

Duh. You're correct, of course. Silly me.

What accounts for the remarkable difference in maximum speed? Is it the ports, the motherboard, or the firmware?

It's the USB controller.
