a friend of mine is going to let me use his 15gig ipod (which i think is gen 2) but i have a few questions:

1. on the gen 2 wasnt there a pc and mac version? i believe he has a pc version so how do i go about flashing it with mac firmware? since i just ripped all my cds via itunes on my powerbook

2. 2nd problem is that i have alot of songs on my pc as well, theres no way to have the ipod to read both systems? or is it possible? can i use itunes on both systems

3. last question i'm about to perform a fresh install on my powerbook, can i use the ipod as a backup drive of sorts? like backup my mp3s on my powerbook and some of my programs..

i have never owned an ipod before so any help would be much appreciated!

I'm not sure about your first question

re: 2 - the iPod can only be linked automatically to one computer at a time. That said, you can probably have it copy music from both the PC and the Mac using either (a) the option to manually manage playlists/songs (and just dragging everything to the iPod - this is a pain compared to auto-updating, but it gets around Apple's anti-piracy limit of syncing to only 1 computer at a time); or (b) use third party software to manage this

re: 3 - yes, you can use the iPod just like any external hard drive - just turn this on through iTunes and it should appear just like an external hard drive would on your Mac.

1 more question...

If i synnced my itunes with my ipod, then format my powerbook. will the powerbook force me to format the ipod after the new install? i think this has something to do with the DRM?
