Hey Everyone, if you've been reading my other threads... I just ordered a dual 2.5 g5, loaded with goodies (nvidia 6800, 2.5 gbs of ram.. etc)
Now... as it is I have a good 4.1 system... and I would prefer that my G5 use it, and possibly be able to handle a 5.1 or better (?) system in the future.
Can anyone suggest (affordable) cards that will work in the g5 that will enable me to get at least 5.1 surround sound?
I've looked around at some places, and mac compatibly seems kinda sketchy on many...
Much Appreciated.

The G5 already has surround output via the optical connector. Just hook it up to a home theater receiver, or speakers that have an optical input, and you're ready to go.
Note that even if you get a sound card with 5.1 or 7.1 analog output, they will not work for DVD Player -- it can only output Dolby Digital and DTS to a digital output, which the G5 already has.

And if you really do need analog audio output beyond the 2.1 provided, you can get an M-audio Revolution sound card. They come in 5.1 and 7.1 flavors and sell for $70-$100, and are OS X compatible.

Just beware that those cards do not have Dolby Digital or DTS decoders, and will only output surround when used with a few games, and with professional audio apps.

Yes, most of the time they use "simulated" surround sound, which just plays sounds from all the speakers. You can configure how the sound is played, volume balance and fade, and so on. I don't actually have the M-audio, my PC's sound card is a Creative Labs so I'm kind of making some assumptions here. Basically you won't get true surround sound, just the effect. It still does sound better than 2.1.

i just got logitech 680 speakers and these will get ya the 5.1 and dts. They work great with my iMac. Nothing else will work tho aside from some klipsch ones as far as true surround goes. A 4.1 speaker set won't work, i stuck my old creative ones in the basement

When will we get a DVD Player app that can do the decoding in software ala WinDVD or PowerDVD (both for Windows)? THat would negate the need for an external hardware decoder.
