Last year, we bought my mom a FreeSpeak BT200 for Mother's day. She liked it, but complained that it kept cutting out, and was very unreliable. After my first semester of college, I realize that I really need a headset, and decided that since she wasn't using the BT200, I'd give it a try...

...but I'm having major issues with it. I can't get the volume down to a reasonable level. The gel is going completely into my ear canal...is that too deep? If I pull it out a little, it still sounds horrible, albeit a bit quieter. My mom says that the noise isn't too loud for her...but she has a small ear, so it must not be going in all the way. Anyway, I don't understand how the sound quality is so poor...it's gross. So many reviews say that it is pristine quality...I don't understand.

I went ahead and bought a wired headset, speficially the EarWave Boom. It sounds fantastic! It came with a smaller gel, which didn't go into my ear canal. I tried that one on the BT200, but the sound was still crap, and still way too loud, even though it was a bit more manageable. I've gotten the volume down to the lowest level on the phone and the headset, but it's just too loud! It hurts my ears!

Did my mother receive a faulty headset, or is this just the nature of a Bluetooth headset? I'd really, really like the convenience of Bluetooth, and I don't even mind of the quality isn't amazing, but I just want it to come close to normal headset quality...

Note: Phone is use is the T637, and my mom has the T616.

I've got the BT200 (paired with a SE T637). No real complaints about it, but I've never used any other BT headsets.

I can control the volume on both the headset and the phone, so if the lowest headset volume is too loud, try turning down the volume on the phone itself.

Edit: just re-read your first post. Not sure why you can't control the volume... no problems with mine.

Is the sound quality comparable to what you'd get without a headset?

I can definately hear better with the headset, since its piped straight in to my ear canal. While I've not asked how I sound to the receiving party, I don't get requests to repeat myself - so I presume they can hear me well-enough.

Well, I can hear 50x better using the phone instead of the headset...

...perhaps it's a faulty headset?
