I have 3 accounts on my G5 Power Macintosh with Mac OS 10.3.7. I have an account with admin privileges, and I can print . The only problem for me is,that printer does not wake up from low-energy mode when trying to print (Auto-Off feature (low energy mode) in HP Inkjet Toolbox-Configuration is enabled ) .Clicking "Utility" from within deskjet 5550 applet to bring up HP Inkjet Toolbox turns on the printer. Auto-Off feature in a "Configuration" tab worked untill an upgrade to Mac OSX v.10.3.4
2. My wife and daughter have "managed" accounts with "some limitations".They can't print at all since an upgrade from 10.3.6 to 10.3.7, it seems. They get error message "Error while printing". They are able to print a test page from within HP Toolbox v.6.5. I am using the newest driver v.2.5
- I uninstalled the driver using "uninstall" option in the installer, and then reinstalled, also deleted and added printer in the Printer Setup Utility
- I repaired permissions and privileges several times using Apple's Disk Utility.
- I ran all hardware tests with Micromat TechTool Pro 4.
- I purchased and ran a battery of tests and fixes with Printer Setup Repair 4.1.8
Any suggestions ?
Power Macintosh G5 1.6 GHz,768 MB RAM
HP printer Deskjet 5550 connected via USB cable , HP Inkjet Toolbox v 6.5 , printer driver HP inkjet 2.5(as shown in Printer Setup Utility v3.0) , deskjet 5550 Proxy applet v3.0

You could try any number of CUPS-interface based approaches, including HPIJS, which is open-source and which many people find works better in some situations.

I tried going CUPS way a few days ago,and it did not work for me. I have frequented some other forums, and it seems, that I am not the only one with printing problems. In fact, two other users have identical problem. Judging by number of posts about printing after updating to 10.3.7 we need to take Apple to task. HP technical support was kind enough to respond very quickly, but their solutions seem to be nothing out of ordinary. I ponder my other options, like Archive and Install.

I have not tried HPIJS yet. I am not sure I will, because my problem seems to be on a system side so I will wait a little to see if Apple is going to fix this in another update.

I found a solution on a Macfixit website a couple weeks ago. I just ran these two lines ,the ones that start with "sudo" and printing for a second and third user came back. I am not sure I should be doing this, but I am pasting this piece I found among "late-breakers" on Macfixit wbsite below:
/tmp link broken, 'pax' missing : MacFixIt reader Steven D. Kapplin offers two workarounds, one which involves re-creating the logical link for the /tmp folder, and another that requires extracting the system component 'pax' from your original Mac OS X Install media.
Kapplin writes:
"Sometimes the /tmp logical link is broken for one reason or another. Here is a procedure to recover from this problem.
1. Start the Terminal program from the Utilities menu
2. Copy and paste the following two commands into the Terminal window. You will be asked for an admin password after the first command. Enter it (it is not echoed in any way) and press return. Note that the "l" character is an "el" and not "eye".
• sudo mv /tmp /tmp_old
• sudo ln -s /private/tmp /tmp
Everything is back to normal !
