hey all...

I just ordered a firewire drive, and I was wondering about the various formatting options available.

What's the smartest option to use? Is there a format that works with both Macs and PC's? Does it have any drawbacks?

I never use PC's, but if these speeds are the same, it might be good to have a drive that's compatible with both.

just curious

thanks

Since you never use PC's, I don't recommend that you format your drive as FAT32. I haven't done any rigorous testing, but I know that formatting an SD USB flash drive as FAT32 significantly slows the drive's read/write speeds. More annoyingly, FAT32 doesn't accept certain OS X friendly characters in file names.

Formatting your drive as FAT32 also means that you have to do without journaling: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107249
