PowerMac G3 Blue& White, os X
CD-RW is HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8240B

Problem: I turn my computer on, it's there (the cd-rw)... it works fine until it doesn't anymore. no apparent reason! it just disappears... (from about this mac ATA and itunes, etc. it's gone,. Itunes will look for it (if I try to burn) forever, as will finder. If I "restart" it does not come back. Now, here's the trick, if I shut down, and start the computer again, there it is, and I can use it again for a while (sometimes hours never days) Is it a driver problem?

Another note, it's set as master (ma) and is last in a line with the zip drive. I tried disconnecting the zip to see if this would help, and it did not, actually it made it so that the cd-rw was not seen. So I re-connected the zip. The zip has no clip on it for any setting, ie. maser/slave.

I like to burn my own music for friends, and this really frustrates me....

do you have any other cd/dvd drives or external hard drives installed? did you install any new hardware or software just before this started happening?
-> 20" iMac Core Duo, 1GB RAM, lame superdrive that burns at 2x
-> MacBook Pro 2GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM
-> MacBook 2.16GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM

the short answer to your question is no. Because I had bought this Mac used, I'm not really sure what the circumstances were when the problem started.
