Hello
Ive tried to set up a new mac mini for a friend who has a Dell with a KVM switch.

the apple does not recognize the dell monitor. Kernal Panic, etc etc

the Dell is a 1800FP about a year old, came with a Dimension 2400 series. It seems to me that its a very poor monitor, very fuzzy, poor contrast. its the monitor dell sells for almost free with there set ups. is this why the Mac mini won't recognize it?

do I need to get a 'better' 17" flat panel? (about all they need) so do only some vga monitors work with apple

help[ VERY much appreciated/

Have you tried plugging the monitor straight into the mini? Or always via the switch?

Is it a DVI or VGA monitor?

A monitor can't cause a kernel panic. It ought to be plugged in using DVI connector and the Mac should be set to 1280 x 1024 resolution.

Definitely try connecting it without the switch in the middle, and if it still won't work, try the VGA input.

Ive done both. apple alone via VGA adapter, and apple alone via dvi. thismonitor has both vga and dvi inputs.

the dell was off.

the kernel panic was real, and lots of numbers etc, Ive copied them down ( im at home now and not at the dells) and it did say that drivers not available

panic cpu 0 unable to find drivers for this platform Power mac 10,1

blunt stall back trace

I have the Dell 1800FP LCD and it works fine hooked up to my 17" PB (via DVI) and my Server 2003 machine (VGA).

Maybe there is something wrong with your friends Mini? I don't really understand how the machine will KP from plugging a monitor into it, even with the monitor off.

Like the other poster suggested, it does run a 1280x1024 native.
