Check it out!
Griffin Technology has announced the Firewave, a Firewire 5.1 audio interface with included Dolby decoders! And for only $10 more than the Sonica Theater.
This is what all of the non PowerMac users need for surround sound! Hurrah! I'm buying one when they come out, which is supposed to be first quarter.

Griffin has a history or delays, but I'm pretty pumped and will be pre-ordering one.

FireWave gets its power through its FireWire connection to the computer -- no separate cables or power supplies to tote
Sounds great ! Thanks for the info.

I wish M-Audio would make an updated sonica 7.1 via firewire. The usb 1.1 seems a bit slow. But yeah... I don't know why they didn't include digital, but at their site it says just the 3 mini plugs..

Doesn't the digital audio out on the G5 provide surround sound?
Or is this unit only for folks without that digital output?

driven... yes, for folks without digital out. We don't all have G5's. ^^ Or I suppose for if your speakers didn't have digital input.
Only Dolby? No DTS? No optical?! What were they thinking?

I could always settle for the revolution card and use coax, but it just aint as cool

It's not bad. If you haven't purchased a Sonica Theatre then the FireWave would certainly be cheaper than the Sonica Theatre and a decoder. OpenAL support for 3D sound for games is added value. On the downside It really should have a DTS decoder and digital out, but most DVD's are Dolby 5.1 anyhow. Not all, but most.
Does anyone know what DAC's it uses? If the sound quality is as good as the Sonica, then I might buy one.
I for one am glad that someone is at last addressing this market.

Scooters are more fun than computers and only slightly more frustrating

Then you probably could use the M-Audio Transit. It has optical out.

I think you narrowed it down, Scooterboy: Dolby Digital is on almost every DVD these days, while DTS is more of a bonus feature. There are also fewer sets of multimedia speakers that have DTS built-in, but more have Dolby Digital. Maybe it is something to do with licensing costs? I'm just guessing. Unless you're setting up home theater based on the computer, can anyone really tell the difference between the two systems with multimedia speakers?
