I'm working on a short animated film, and I need a good microphone for doing voice-work. Can anybody recommend a certain microphone? Preferably something that won't break the bank.

Maybe he just wants to know what mic options will work with USB. I'd like to know too, as my iBook doesn't have a sound input port.

*ANY* mic options will work with USB if you get a USB interface with mic preamp and phantom power.

Your options range from $80 to $4000.

Please specify.

Ok, then specifically, with the Griffin iMic, which has 1/8" stereo microphone input.

Ack.

There are no "good microphones for doing voice-work" that give you an asymmetric minijack output.

The 1/8" mini jack on the iMic is a balanced input for mic inputs. You can buy the cable or make it. it goes as follows

XLR 1/8" stereo mini
Pin1 = Shield
Pin2 = Tip
Pin3 = Ring

With that being said the most basic mic for voice over work is a Shure SM58 mic. price can be found for around $100
Quicksilver 867, 700mhz iBook, 1st Gen iPod, iSight, Newton 2100, and a 128k Mac. All operating and used on a constant Basis

well, yeah - it's a fairly decent all-round stage dynamic most commonly used for vocals.

But the original poster was asking about voice-over work, not singing.

I second the SM58. It's a great all-around mic for the price...

or, if you wanna go with a condensor and an external pre-amp for better studio quality:

Studio Projects B1 mic ($100 street price):
http://www.studioprojectsusa.com/b1.html

Studio Projects VTB-1 mixed-mode tube/transistor pre-amp ($160 or so street price):
http://www.studioprojectsusa.com/vtb1.html

sweet little set-up for spoken-voice recording.

large diaphragm condenser is the way to go, for sure.

you may need to be able to supply phantom power.

I second the Studio Projects recommendation, for the $$ it's a great deal.
