I was going to use one of these for my pc/mac systems.
two questions...
1, There are SO many posts about these drives becoming unmounted and crashing in the apple forums around the net especally the La Cie.( I would build my own) Are these a bad idea and just bound to crash?
2. how easily could this be hot swapped between a G5 and my PC.....moving files...downloading on one or the other...etc..

thanks chad

You only read about the problems - I have 3 external FW drives and have never had any problems - I usually update with them plugged in (cause I forget to unplug them) - mine are all homemade from enclosures - I also swap one to my PC and back to my Mac - Never Ever had any issues I wager there are thousand working for every one that posts a problem

I've used 3 at home and one at work with no problems. The one at work gets used between Macs and PCs (use PC formatting). italiano is probably right - for everyone with a problem, there are probably thousands without problems.

Always a good idea to go for a hd with a good warranty (*cough* SEAGATE *cough*) but likewise I've been running FW drives for years with hardly any hiccups.

I have two:

A western digital 120 gb in an aluminum fw/usb2 housing which I did myself. Works great after about a years and half of intense usage.

And recently I picked up a Lacie 160 gb porsche fw drive that I got on sale which aslo runs really quiet and is a bit smaller (and nicer looking) than the other case.

Again, never really had a problem - occasional to intense usage.

You can format the disk fat32 and it will work more or less ok with both OS X and Windows.

I've had to external's (2.5") that eventually stop mounting for me. The latest is a ClearLight case. It's very annoying as I have a spare HDD but can't use it because the firewire externals give up.

USB 2.0 is no good for me because you cannot use it then as a bootable drive.
PowerBook 12" Combo 1.5Ghz 1.25GB Ram 100GB HDD - Yep it's PPC! I'll wait for the 3rd generation MacTel when they're at their best :)
