I have a spare 20GB 2.5" 5400rpm hard drive, sitting in a really quite crap USB 2.0 external enclosure. It is crap in that it needs a special, forked USB cable in order to draw enough electricity to power itself, and also in that the hard drive rattles around inside the case; it is made of aluminium and you can hear it hitting the sides quite distinctly.

So, I ask if anyone knows of an enclosure that has both FireWire and USB 2.0 connectivity and, if such a thing exists, also doubles as an MP3 player. I rememebr reading about such an idea, long ago, but Google does not be nice to me.

But the MP3 player is not so important. A 2.5" enclosure that can power itself over FireWire, not have to use a weird USB-Extension cable as well (I've seen them; they transfer data over FireWire, but need a USB cable as well, just for electricity), that'd do me fine.

Thanks for any help.

MP3 support I think you might be out of luck. As for your firewire/USB enclosure, there are quite a few at newegg, such as this this or this

Google was good to me just now and found me this. But that's all that I could find, and let's just say it doesn't make me want to buy it.

Thanks for the links. I should have said, I really don't like the metal enclosures, so this one was more to my liking.

I now look more into the DIY MP3 player, or maybe even eBook idea...
