HP PSC1210, how do I scan without HP software?

I have noticed that the HP software sucks and loads up OS 9 stuff. I have also noticed some people complaining about not being able to print unless logged in. I have been able to print without the software, but am not sure if I can or how to scan.

I'll second the recommendation for VueScan. I was just using it the other day and I was thinking about how cool it was.
