Hello, I just had a 250 GB hard drive die on me. The drive just lays silent when connected to power. I had an IT professional tell me that it appears as if the hard drive controller needs replacement and that the best way to do it is to go buy the same hard drive and swap it out.

I wouldn't mind buying the extra drive, the data is what is important to me.

Has anyone had experience with this before.
Is it difficult to swap out the controller? Are both drives considered unsafe to use once this procedure is performed?

If you are referring to the controller circuit on the motherboard, replacing that would be something to leave to a pro (authorized service center)

If you are talking about the electronics on the underside of the drive housing, same thing.

But you could just try a pci card controller to test the drive with, to see where the problem actually is. But if the drive wont power up, you are probably S*O*L in both regards

If you can get the controller for the drive it can be replaced. You would need the exact same replacement, usually from the same model of drive. Usually they are held in by 4 scews and the circuit board just comes off. It is just as cost effective to replace the drive.
