hi,
i've been looking to get into digital photography and need something that will grow with me. my roommate is offering to sell me his d60 with sigma lens for 425 or his f707v for 300. both of these camera's are older, but the d60 seems like a very serious camera that will grow with me...but i'm stuck because they are both older...should i buy either one or use the money towards another more current camera (i couldn't go much above the 425 though).
hopefully there are serious photographers on the macnn forums who will be able to assist me! thanks ahead of time and let me know if there is anything i should keep in mind about either of these cameras or digital photography in general!

Go with the D60, from what Ive heard its still a very capable camera (pixel count asside), plus in the event of something breaking you could always get it fixed by Canon or some qualified technicion.

of those two i'd definitely pick the D60. you can build up your lens collection with it, and stick with it forever (or upgrade the body later at your whim). 6 MP is more than enough for non-huge (11x17" and under) prints, and the high ISO performance of the D60 will wipe any non-dSLR camera across the floor.

There is an excellent review of the D60 on DPReview.com
One thing to be aware of with a DSLR like the D60 is that the sensors are prone to dust, and can be tricky to keep clean (or expensive if you don't want to do it yourself).

www.visibledust.com, sounds crazy, BUT is what i use to clean my 20d and works like a charm. If you go to the pro forum on dpreview.com this is what they use, and to go with the consensus, D60 all the way!

D60. Period. The other one is a toy compared to it.

thanks for the great advice, so clearly the concensus is the d60 over the f707v...i'm just concerned that it is "outdated"...should i just try to throw in a few hundred more for a 300d, i'm not really clear on how much "better" the 300d is given that they are the same megapixels. lemme know what y'all think! thanks!

The D60 is a damn fine camera. And it's hardly "outdated..." a D60 is superior to a 300D (even a brand new one) -- there's more functionality available.
$400 for a D60 with a Sigma lens is a STEAL. It takes professional quality pictures, it's really a very very good camera.
I used a D60 for 3 years before getting a 1D mark II. The picture quality... is about the same. 1D mark II is better in low light, and auto-focus is faster (by far), but if you compose a picture, the quality is very similar (the 1D has 2 more megapixels but that's only useful if you blow the pics up > 11x17").
Again. D60. Excellent camera. Go for it.

300d with the hacked russian firmware (basically making it into the 10d). I use it now and just having the peace of mind that its new and has 0 accutations before I bought it has made the purchase a lot better. If you can spring for the extra money, get the Canon 300d+Canon 50mm f1.8 (or any other lens, this just so happens to be cheap and of good optical quality). Caution: installing the hacked firmware voids your warrenty.

Everything with at least 4 MP is enough if you are an amateur. I have 5 (Olympus E-20) and I never had any issues with the resolution. An 8 MP camera isn't tempting for me just for the sake of resolution ...
