I'm on a MDD Dual G4, so I'm still on USB 1.1. My gf is getting a Mini iPod and I have a Shuffle so I'd like to add a USB 2.0 card for speed and power. I don't mind taking up a card slot so I have a couple of questions:
1) Are PCI cards powered?
2) Will I be able charge my iPods if they're hooked up?
3) If my keyboard is plugged into the (built-in) 1.0 port, will it slow down the whole the whole chain? Or does that matter only if a 1.0 device is plugged into the 2.0 port?
3) recommendations?

1) yes
2) yes
3) no, you can plug usb 1 devices anywhere with no problem
4) search newegg and check xlr8yourmac for compatibility.
well those are the short answers. I have a MDD also (in sig) and I got a 5 port usb 2 card from newegg.com for $13 or something. Mine didn't say if it supported OS X, but xlr8yourmac said yes so I got it and it works perfectly. I use it to charge my ipod mini and I use the other 3 external ports for usb 1 devices and sometimes my external HD.

I bought a belkin one a while back that had a USB port on the card, such that when it was installed it stayed on the inside. Great place to put one of those bluetooth dongles.

Yep, mine has 4 external and one internal port. The pictures at newegg aren't always accurate, but the description will tell you if it has an internal port.

Yup, all the "5 port" USB cards are like that. You can always only actually use 4 of them -- if you use the internal one, you have to not use one of the external ones.

Hmm, I will have to test this out. So far every product desciption has clearly said 5 downstream ports, not one said anything about only using 4. Do you have a link for this? I have never seen you wrong here before but this time I kind of hope you are .
