I just received an iBook from a friend (hand me down, for papers). The problem is that it has a dead HD. We disassembled the Machine and removed the HD to see if we could repair the HD. We put it in a HD enclosure and tried to attach it to my friends new powerbook. The drive spins, but cannot be seen by the powerbook. Furthermore when it spins the led on the enclosure is red, and it seems like it is constantly trying to spin up, like it can't start. The best analogy I can give is that it is similar to turning a car on in the winter when it won't start, you can hear the engine trying to turn and it just doesn't have enough to get over that hump and turn the car on completely, the drive has that type of sound. It isn't loud, but it's like it is trying to spin up but just can't seem to get started.

Can this be fixed? Is there a website somewhere that can give me info to fix this?

Peace,

O
B unce!

Hard drives are super-mega-precision devices, and require a high-grade clean room to be worked on. In other words, you don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of being able to fix it.

And even if you could, why? You'd be risking your data to a marginal drive that you could replace for under $100.
