I have a PowerBook G4 running 10.3.8 and am using an old CRT screen (a Dell) as an external monitor (with the DVI to VGA adaptor). I use the monitor as an extended desktop (not mirrored, for now anyway) and have fast user switching enabled. Everything works fine for awhile, including switching between users. However, after 6 or 7 switches the external monitor goes to a flat blue with nothing showing. Detect displays does nothing, and the only fix I have found is to log out of all the users on the powerbook and log back in, which fixes the problem. I called Apple support and their solution was to do an archive and reinstall of the operating system, which they said would not be difficult and would not affect any system settings or any of my programs (including the ones I run with X11, etc.). Sorry if this is obvious, but is that true? I've never had to deal with this before. Also, does this seem like the right solution or is there a better way to fix it? They said it would fix some preference file that gets corrupted, but they weren't clear about it. Thanks for any advice.
