Does external Iomega hard drive sleep

I just bought an external Iomega 120G hard drive for convenient backups. I was reading through the manual and it says that I have to power it off when the computer is asleep or shut down. This seems kind of silly to me as my computer is set to go to sleep if it is inactive for 30 minutes so it goes to sleep pretty frequently throughout the day. Shouldn't the drive put itself to sleep when not in use? Will it hurt it to leave it on?
