Should I ask this question or are they all about the same quality. Got a Lacie external 52 about year or so ago, and it seems to be acting up. Any good tips appreciated. Lacie makes two versions.

Dr.
Your thread is very different. I'm asking about CDR not DVD external burner. If I buy another is there a recommendation for durability or are they all about the same quality out there.

My Lacie 52x CDR burner only, is dead after only 15 months.

I am sorry that your burner died so soon. Is there no longer warranty on it? Lacie is a very good company. I in your place would call them. They sell their products for premium prices, so their service should match that (and indeed it does, at least here in europe).

My idea was to show you how to upgrade your burner while you can keep your case (if the failure is not in the case which means oxford fw bridge or power adapter). The lg burner also burns cd-r/-rw at high speed (40/24). Thus you can get a dvd AND cd burner for less money than a new external cd burner. That was the idea.

Quality/durability tests are very hard to find. My lacie burner came with a Mitsumi cd drive. I did not use it a lot, but I never had any problems. In fact, I don't know anyone who ever had a problem with a burner. Exceptions: My internal TiBook 500 MHz DVD drive (not a burner) and a freecom traveler 4X cd burner (long time ago. it was replaced because of a 3 year warranty). Both problems were mechanical, not electronic problems.

In external cases you might find multiple brands. Even lacie uses different brands in the same case type (because of supply/demand/price). If you want security for your investment buy a drive from a good company (Plextor, Teac, Mitsumi, Nec, and yes - LG) and make sure they offer more than 12 months of warranty.

I think you just had bad luck with your drive.

Well I'm 15 months with burner, I doublt Lacie would do anything for free. No? It was Lite on Lite.

Those companies mentioned make external burners, or they are the burners that Lacie puts inside the box.

Wonder if someone, or Lacie would put one of those inside the box.
But the new burners start at $80, so may not be much of savings.

Those companies mentioned make internal burners. The ones that other companies put into their boxes.
The internals mentioned might not be cheap. Actually Plextor and Teac are expensive. Lacie puts them into their boxes, but as Dr.Michael said, you can indeed not know what you get in your external box. Only if you buy an internal burner you know what you get.

I would recommend a DVD burner. Especially if you buy them as external drives, the price difference is not big. Consider a slimline drive, because they are FireWire powered and really portable. My external DVD burner is very heavy and still needs a power cable.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

you can take your lacie apart and put a new drive in there. you can go to newegg.com and get another drive, cd or dvd, and just stick it in there.
