Im looking at getting a second monitor for my iMac G5. My first question is is it possible to use a second monitor to extend the desktop, not just mirror it? I thought I remembered reading that it can't be done without some software trickery. If thats true then what software do I need? Or do I need to do some kind of hardware hacking? (i hope not)

Also I want to know what adapters, if any, are required to do this. I have a "mini-VGA port".

last question: Apple and Dell are the only widescreen monitor manufacturers i have sen so far. Doesn't anyone else make widescreen monitors? Preferably smaller (read: cheaper) than 20".

OK, one more question. Whats the best place to find cheap, and I mean really cheap, monitors, besides eBay?

I know a lot of these questions have been answered before, but I want to make sure there isn't some new awesome (and cheap) monitor that wasn't talked about in the old threads i found in the search.

Thanks in advance.

If you want to add a second monitor to your iMac, you will need to apply this patch Screen Spanning Doctor to allow the monitor spanning.

I think the iMac has a mini-vga out port (it might be a mini-dvi).

If the LCD has vga and dvi, then you won't have any problems.

edit: didn't see that you said it had a mini-vga. Any monitor with a vga input will work.

The cheapest place I know for LCD monitors is:

www.tigerdirect.com

You can easily find a 17" for under $200. Just make sure you read the warranty information at the bottom of the description. I have seen some only come with a 3 month warranty.
