Hi Y'all,
How can I use my 15" TiBook to print onto my old LaserWriter 16/600 PS. Can I somehow connect my laserwriter onto my netgear router and print off of my tibook through airport?

According to Apple your printer is compatible with OS X and if your TiBook has an Ethernet port you can connect the printer to it.
The router is another story... Not all third-party routers support sharing Apple printers on a network and I am not familiar with Netgear equipment. The router must be capable of supporting AppleTalk. I am using a LaserWriter Select 360 connected to an Apple Extreme Base Station using a refurbished AsanteTalk (the LaserWriter does not have an Ethernet port) and it works just dandy.
USB printers can be shared on a network when the printer is connected to one Mac; I do not know if this is possible with an AppleTalk printer connected via Ethernet. It may be possible to share an AppleTalk printer using TCP/IP; perform a search using Google and see what comes up.

Thanks Mojo,
But my LaserWriter does not have an ethernet connection, it has the round plug and the serial which both won't work with my Tibook. And currently the LaserWriter is connected to my PC. I just figured since both my pc and my "gossamer"--yes, I have a beige G3 mini-tower, haha--are both plugged in the netgear and my TiBook is on airport. If I hook up the printer directly to the netgear (ethernet cable) then all three computers can print on it. Right? Um...yeah,,,right, right?

If you want, you can use your beige G3 or your PC as a print server. The caveat is that the machine needs to be switched on when you want to print something. If you run OS X on it, it's really easy to set it up.
If you want to leave it hooked up on the PC, share it via Windows sharing and then add a Windows (samba) printer on your TiBook.

Hmmm...I looked up your printer model before replying the first time and the specs indicated that it had an Ethernet port. Oh Well...
You can use the AsanteTalk to connect the printer to a Mac with an Ethernet port (or a wireless router if it has Ethernet and it supports AppleTalk.) The connections go like this: cable from the "round plug" (otherwise known as a LocalTalk port) to the AsanteTalk, then a standard Ethernet cable to your Mac or router.
The AsanteTalk is about the size of a pack of playing cards. A refurbished unit is $59 (new is $129.) All I can say is that it works flawlessly on my system.
Again, as I understand it, the Netgear router must be capable of handling AppleTalk if you want to share the printer on your network while it is connected to the router. That information is in your manual or available from Netgear.

If your printer does have an ethernet port... you should see a symbol like this:
<--->
below the port, you just need an adapter as such:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW
it has one plug for the printer, the other for the network cable to your router.

I have an old Farallon EtherMac iPrint adapter (equivalent of the Asante device) that I'm looking to get rid of. PM me if you're interested.

The link zerostar furnished should work.
For future reference of those searching the forum archives:
What you're looking for is an AAUI to RJ-45 (or AAUI to Ethernet or AAUI to 10baseT) transceiver.
plug "AAUI Ethernet transceiver Laserwriter 16/600" into Google, and you get plenty of hits.
You should be able to find something there for under $20.

The LW 16/600 speaks Ethernet (as per specifications), but it uses a different, older kind of connector called AAUI.

Hi Y'all,
Thanks for all of the info, I need to research my situation a little more. Funny thing is, you guys have given me a lot of useful information which I need to research and understand. I'm a lil' slow with the lingo, ya know. I do not quite understand how to use my beige or my pc as a print server, I will have to look that up. I will also have to find out more about the AAUI plugs and the ethernet capabilities. Thank you very much, I will get this going sooner or later!

The LaserWriter 16/600 uses the same type of ethernet interface used by 61/71/8100 series Power Macs. You need an AAUI (Apple Attachment Unit Interface) transceiver. You should be able to find one someplace. Try to find a used one, or go here.
Good luck!

I print wirelessly to my LW 16/600 all the time via Appletalk. You already know about the adapter, what's not been said is that you need a base station that supports Appletalk or else you need to know how to setup the LW to use IP printing. I'm using a Buffalo Airstation ($40) from my 12" rev B PBmini. I don't know if the Netgears support appletalk over wireless (most routers support appletalk over ethernet, but not many support the wireless portion), you'll have to do some research on that.
Previously, I printed via Appletalk from my former Ti-400 with a Buffalo wi-fi card via Appletalk ($25). The Mac-specific model of the Buffalo pc-card uses the Broadcom chip, giving you native support in 10.2.6 and up, along with appletalk support. As you may know, the internal card in the Ti has atrocious wireless range, so if you want good range you have to go with a PMCIA wireless card.
Now, if the Netgear doesn't support appletalk over wireless, you'll need to setup IP printing. And it's a good thing you've got the Ti, since booting into OS 9 is easier: you need to use the OS 9-only Apple Printer Utility, version 2.2. You'll be able to download it from the old archived software portion of the download section of Apple.com. However, easiest place to download it, is from the the OS 9 tab at versiontracker.com
It also works in Classic, provided you run with appletalk enabled.
To configure, hook up via ethernet to the Netgear, with the LW also hooked up via ethernet. Startup in OS 9 or in Classic with appletalk enabled. Fire up the Apple Printer Utility, and use it to setup the LW with an appropriate IP address (something like 192.168.1.100), which you'll write down and archive with your passwords, because you'll need it when you're configuring IP printing from Jaguar or Panther. While you're in the printer, print out the banner page, because it tells you very useful things, like the MAC address.
You can also setup the LW using telnet, but that's way more complicated and you need to know the MAC address to use as the password.

Hey amazing, I just got a 16/600 PS. I have a 17" rev C G4 Powebook. I bought an AAUI transceiver to connect it via Ethernet and the Laserwriter does rev up a little when I start the Printer Setup Utility (OS X), but it can't detect the printer. The Apple Printer Utility (Classic) doesn't detect it either.
Any help with the setup would be much appreciated.

(wasn't following this older thread--just accidentally happened to check the forum...)
In your Network System Pref panel, under the ethernet tab, do you have Appletalk enabled?
Since the Apple Printer Utility is a Classic App, have you used the OS 9 Control Panel called Extensions Manager to make sure that AppleTalk is activated, then used the AppleTalk Control Panel to set the preference to "Ethernet", then checked in the Chooser to make sure the AppleTalk button is turned on? (i know it's confusing, but i hope you have familiarity with OS 9?)
All this, of course, presupposes that you actually know that the 16/600 is in usable condition and does actually print. When you got it, did you get a "banner sheet" that tells you what the page count is, etc. This would at least confirm that it works, and it would also give you essential details if you need to telnet to the LW 16/600.
The easiest way to configure it would be if you or someone you know has a Mac that can boot into OS 9.

I'd also suggest posting your problem in the appropriate Apple tech support forums, there are loads of very helpful helpers.

If I remember correctly, I had to set the printer name from the HP LaserJet utility for OS 9. I may be mistaken, but that should also give you the option to configure a bunch of other things (including AppleTalk, which is necessary to have on). AFAIK, all of those printers use the same engine (a Canon), so the LaserJet app should work.

The LaserWriter is a regular Postscript 2 (and PCL) printer which means it'll work for sure. Find out what IP the printer is set to and then connect manually. For the first couple of printouts, the generic Postscript driver will do.

Yes to all

Yes, the IP addy's set to 10.0.0.71. (Responds to pings) Though when I try to telnet in, it fails.

I have an old Tangerine iBook lying around, but I've lost OS 9 (put Debian on it). I'll get the system disks from a friend, then I'll let you know how it goes.

You have to configure the printer in OS X not OS 9. Did you try setting up an lpr printer, using the IP you assigned to the print server (10.0.0.71)? If you can't find the LaserWriters ppd (copy it from OS 9 if you must), you can use the generic postscript ppd as well.

It's up! Props to amazing, oreo and timmydee!
For anyone else who finds themselves in this situation, once you get the IP address, you can add the printer manually in OS X with the Printer Setup Utility:
-From the top pulldown menu, pick "IP Printing"
-Under the "Printer Type" pulldown menu pick "LPD/LPR"
-In the "Address" box, enter the IP address
-From the "Printer Model" pulldown menu pick "Apple", then choose "Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS v2014.106" in the box that appears.
