I've got a microphone here and it doesn't work in my G5. About 4 years ago, I bought a small white cable that would connect any PC mic with a Mac. This connector doesn't work in G5's. Are there any connector/adapters that work with PC mics and G5's?

There is no such thing as a "PC" mic and a "Mac" mic, unless you are talking about the old Apple SmallTalk mics (I think that's what they were called) that Apple stopped making about ten years ago.

what kind of mic are you talking about?

are you hooking it up to the right port? It should be the one labelled with two triangles pointing into a circle, something like this: |>O<|

Have you selected the "line in" port as the sound input in the System Preferences?

Is there a battery in your mic that may need replacing?

etc. etc.

Everything is setup correctly, yet I'm getting no input signal. This is a brand new headset microphone, Altec Lansing: AHS502i.

This is what I bought about 4 years ago which allowed me to use, "standard PC-style microphones."

Ah, a headset mic.

if you've selected it as the input source in the Sound System Preference, both plugs are connected, and you're hearing the computer's audio output on the headphones, then you're probably looking at a hardware failure. Unless of course the mic outputs so little signal that it needs to be pre-amplified. In that case, though, it probably wouldn't be advertised as "platform-universal" in all the online catalogues I've found.

Hm.

That's just a miniature mic pre-amplifier. Okay.

That Griffin adapter is for Macs that have a PlainTalk-compatible input: it uses the extra-long plug that provides power. When Apple removed audio-in around 2001, the PlainTalk input was killed, and when the audio-in returned, it was NOT PlainTalk compatible.

So that adapter will NOT work on any PowerBook G4, nor most Power Mac G4 models, nor any G4 or G5 iMac.

I suggest an iMic or other similar USB device, or go to Radio Shack and buy a small mixer, which will have mike inputs and line-level outputs.

And iMic will make my mic work? It will or it should? I don't want to buy another device if it isn't going to make a difference.
