I recently acquired a Mac mini (my first Mac ever, and very nice it is too).

One slight disadvantage is the paucity of USB slots: with mouse and keyboard attached the only way I can scan would be to find some way to
use my camcorder as a USB-to-Firewire adapter (just joking, though it wouldn't surprise me if this was in some way possible). The more realistic alternative would of course be some form of USB hub. However I noticed recently that a friend's Apple keyboard had a couple of USB slots at the back. which would probably do the trick too, and look cooler as well (my current USB keyboard is rather cheap and tacky).

What I haven't been able to find though is useful specs for the keyboard - I think the model no. is M9034LL/A, the only cable sort Apple seems to be selling right now - anyone know whether it and its ports are USB 2 or 1?

All Apple USB keyboards to date have only USB 1.1 ports.

If buying a hub, make sure the hub can take USB 1.1 and 2.0 peripherals without changing ALL ports to 1.1. All newer hubs should do that.
