Hey All,

I just recently got a Motorola V551 as it was the cheapest phone I could get that still had Bluetooth (I don't need all the other features of more expensive bluetooth enabled phones).

Anyhow, I'm trying to get it to sync with my Mac using iSync but can't get it to work. iSync doesn't see the device.

I think the problem lies in my Bluetooth preferences pane. When I go to setup a new device, it finds my phone with no problem. However, when it asks me what services I would like to setup, both isync and address book are grayed out as options. The only selectable option is the Internet connection option.

Anyone have any ideas?

Moto V551 is NOT supported by iSync. Everybody's been hoping that more phone models will be supported in Tiger, but NDAs prevented any news so far. I was able to push v-cards over to my Nokia via Bluetooth File Exchange (in the utilities folder.) Not terribly fast or fulfilling, but better than entering by hand.

Well that's too bad. I ordered this phone because it is listed on apple's page of supported devices.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/devices.html

That page, admittedly, is for Tiger. So perhaps it will be supported?

Looks to me like you have discovered an excellent incentive to upgrade to Tiger. There's the discount offers from amazon.com or from OWC, or maybe you qualify for edu discounts?

Yeah, I already pre-ordered through amazon (I work as a graphic designer so OS updates get me excited, especially Spotlight!). Anyhow, I just hope the phone works with Tiger because if I wait to find out and it doesn't, it will be too late to return the phone.

Excellent! I'll finally be able to sync my V600 with Bluetooth.

Many have said that the original problem was the fact that Pather and earlier didn't support SyncML, which the Moto phones rely on for syncing. I think USB syncing was just a hack. I also remember Steve talking about SyncML support in a keynote last year. Looks like it's paying off.

Glad the link has proved useful. Let's hope the models they list work as we hope they will...

I'm also trusting that Tiger will support the V551. In the mean-time, OnSync can at least push phone numbers onto it for you, saving the hassle of typing them all in manually.

Something else to watch while you're in your return period: the 551 has terrible defect rates on its power circuitry, and many don't hold a charge nearly as long as they should. I'm on my third, which still doesn't last the advertised time, but it lasts enough longer than the first two that I'll put up with it. (the second one could barely go 36 hours in standby, without a single call)

Thanks for the info mishakim. I haven't tried OnSync, perhaps that can tide me over until Tiger is released. I haven't noticed any power issues with my phone yet, but I've had it under a week so I'll keep an eye on it.
