JUst hit end of the road with a lacie (Lite on) external cdr burner and it turns out that only firmware updates offered are for Window users! So I can't even explore if that would have solved my problem. Isn't that crazy?

They exist, but the external drive vendor has to provide it. But one vendor (I forget the name) had their firmware updater hacked, and now people use it for all manner of firmware updates on the Mac. Do some google sleuthing and you should be able to find some reference.

Let me ask... I have a d2 LaCie FireWire burner, it came from factory with a Lite-On cdrw drive, I replaced it with a Philips 1640 dual layer drive, (my PowerMac lacks a SuperDrive), it toast DVDs fine. Must I apply a firmware update to the LaCie drive (maybe to get Dual Layer burn support, though, or even to improve the actual perfomance) ?

First of all DL discs are rare and $$$ still, so untill you need DL support (if your drive doesn't already support it) I would wait untill you need it. DVR-109 shipped without it, but under a month later a firware update added it. But, no sense updating firmware if it works now. And later if you decide you want to, a newer version may be available then is available now, saving you an update. Why not put the drive internal? Any reason for the case?

Yes, I am not that interested about Dual Layer DVDs, so I am with you in that advice.

About the internal thing, I tried it, but the system was unable to see it, even with PatchBurn3, so since I have the LaCie case, I just used it and put the from LaCie´s factory speedy lite-on cdrw drive as second drive unit inside my MDD. So I have all them working fine.

Something radically bad must have happened to Lacie, because they used to be a very Mac friendly company.
