HI

I am looking to purchase an iSight webcamera. However, I was wondering if somebody could send me an example clip, or even apicture to show the quality of the video from this webcam.

WOuld people generally recommend this, or are there better alternatives out there?

Thanks, James

I have an iSight, and also a Panasonic DVX-100 DV cam. While the DV cam is very expensive, it's doubles as an amazing web cam. (granted it cost me $4000) The iSight, when light is good, works just as well, and is a steal it's price. I got mine on eBay for only $80. Just be aware, it needs good lighting to really work well.

The iSight's low-light performance is excellent for a camera of this price. See http://forums.macnn.com/57/consumer-hardware-and-components/251271/is-isight-worth-the-money/

It really isnt bad in low light, the only webcam im aware of that could better it, is the Philips Toucam Pro, which had amazing low light performance. But as with any cam, the more light the better..
As webcams go though, The iSight is very good quality. Not quite on par with a DV cam however, but then those cost rather a lot more, so..
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

I have an isight and am happy with the picture quality but since I have never used any other webcam I don't have a lot to compare it to. I also hear that Tiger and the h.264 codec will improve the video quality. I hope so. $80 is a great price, I got mine for $20 more in the marketplace forum. The picture quailty is nice when there is lots of clean/white light, but since I am usually looking at a person's face I don't mind when the background is black and their face is only illuminated by a desk light.

If you're having lighting issues, use the software iGlasses. Gives you a lot of manual controls over picture settings.

Is there anyway to get an isgight to work with any of the msn clients, so that i can have a video conference with pc users?

I know the official microsoft version for mac doesnt allow this, but are there any alternatives that do?

Nothing to do with the iSight, MSN for Mac simply can't do this at the moment. No alternatives can either, at this stage.

Get them to use AIM, so you can chat to them with iChat for Mac to AIM for Windows. Yahoo messenger also works too.

It's by far the best that I have used. I filmed two of our c-ockatiels with the iSight attached to a Dual 800 G4 tower. I hope this helps!

A short quicktime film using an iSight and iMovie HD (3.4MB)

Is it ever likely that I could use my iSight (if i get one) with a piece of software, that would enable myself and a pc user to video conference (not including ichat/ AIM, as my mates say they dont want any AOL stuff on their pcs!)

Also, is it ecver likely that MSN will be upgraded to do video?

I can buy one fpor £90 with educational discount - would you say its worth this much?

I need to be able to use it with PC USERS, thats the only problem, without them needing AIM.

There are many cross-platform video chat apps. Any of them should work with the iSight. The best-known of them is probably iVisit, which does support iSight. (iSight functions as a standard QuickTime video source, so any app that uses QuickTime can use iSight.)

that video was funny.

oh, and on topic, I've got an iBot firewire webcam, and it's great. I'd definitely get an iSight if I were getting another.. the iBot has no mic.

You can get this to work fine using iChat on a Mac and Trillian Pro on Windows. Runs across AIM of course, but unless your mates have some philosophical problem with that, it should work fine.

I wouldn't say my friends have a philosophical problem, I would say that they know nothing about computers so the less software they have to install and get used to, and the less firewall modifiactions the better.

Does yahoo video suck for anyone else here? I have used it a few times and never get more than a frame a second.

Sounds about right for Yahoo. It's really more "slideshow" than "video".
