Up to now I had a Treo 180 (Palm OS 3.5.1 I think) that really worked well with Panther and Palm Desktop 4.1 software.

Now, I'm getting a Treo 270 because my 180 broke. I would like to know what the easiest way is to transfer all my apps, my notes, datebook entries and addresses as well as my entire prefs from the old to the new Palm. Of course I can do it manually over the infrared port, but it's a bit tedious to send every single file (I have about 900) over infrared.

Isn't there a nice and simple way to tell the Palm Desktop Software to copy all the files from the old Palm to the HD and then from there to the new Palm? I checked the Palm Desktop help, but it didn't mention anything about migration from one device to another.

Just go into Conduit Settings and set them all to "Macintosh overwrites handheld", and the restore app to "restore". Then hotsync.

Geez, it's really that simple? And no conflicts when taking over pref files from OS 3.5.1 to a newer Palm OS?

Great. Thanks, tooki.

Actually, the first time you HotSync with the 270, Palm Desktop will ask you to select your old Palm Username or create a new one. Select the old one to sync everything from your last HotSync over to the new device.

Will that work w/o special settings for my conduits, or do I have to use the settings tooki mentioned even if I do what you suggest?

You're just replacing one Treo with another right? The new one should be new out of the box and have no data. The first time an empty Palm device is synced, it copies all of the data in your Palm Backup folder to the new device. Future HotSyncs will be a normal sync and work with your conduits.

When I migrated from my Palm III to my Clié, I set the conduits to what I said above, just to make sure that HotSync doesn't, for some reason, decide that the contents of the handheld are better, and therefore copy the blank handheld to the computer. The latter has never happened to me, but I have seen it happen to someone before. Better safe than sorry!

OK, I just got the new Treo and followed tooki's procedure. It took ages to transfer the 12MB, but it worked. Thanks.
