Tried hookin up a friend's dvd burner to my ibook through firewire figuring that it would natively add the drive to the desktop but I was wrong and I am now stumped :-\ any help ?

Optical drives do not get added to the desktop on OS X. Do this, click on the Apple Menu, select About This Mac and then click on the More Info... button to open the System Profiler. On the left side of the System Profiler window, click on Firewire and take a look to see if any information about the drive is shown.
