Hi everyone. I just currently won a PowerBook from the Tiger release giveaway on the 29th at my local Apple store, and I just can't wait to spice up my system.

I would like to set up an external dvd burner but I have a few questions about it.

1. Can I use any internal dvd drives (such as my LiteOn 811s) along with a Mac compatible enclosure to run as an external dvd burner?

2. What factor do I look at for an external drive to be compatible with a Mac? The drive itself, or the enclosure? Most of the dvd burners I've seen only state it works with XP (unless I've overlooked the Mac specifications), which is why I'm wondering if I could use a burner I have set up in my PC desktop, and simply place it in an external enclosure compatible with a Mac.

3. If this is the case, would I have to find an enclosure with a firewire interface? Or would a usb suffice?

Thanks guys.

Not very helpful maybe but I bought a Philips DVDR 1640 DL, I placed it inside my 'old' FireWire 400 LaCie d2 enclosure and it is working nice, though I used patchburn 3.0 to get iLife support.

1. this philips is really an internal unit working inside a external enclosure, the drives are standard, the CD burner the LaCie d2 had from factory is working as second optical drive inside my PowerMac MDD.

2. maybe the FireWire bridge is crucial, about the burner, you can get additional support using patchburn http://www.patchburn.de/

3. FireWire works great, USB… you mean USB2 right?
