I have a fairly new HP LaserJet 2550n and have no problem printing with it with either a USB or ethernet connetion. However when I am online via modem (my only choice for going online), I can not print. Once I get offline I have no problem printing again. The error message that I get from print center is that the printer can not be found.

I've had this problem ever since I got the printer about a month ago. I was using 10.3.9, and 10.4 has not cleared up the problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

What kind of modem do you use, cable or regular modem? What IP addresses did you designate to your computer and to your printer?

Regular internal modem. Out here in the boonies dial up is my only real.

The printers' IP address is 199.0.0.199. I can ping it when I am offline but not when I'm online.

Thanks,
Jim

I made a mistake in my first reply. the printer's IP address is 192.0.0.192 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. My computer's IP address 199.172.38.5.

Problem Solved!

Our home network is in the IP address range of 199.172.38.x with each piece of equipment having a different digit for x. The printer's default IP address was 192.0.0.192. At someone's suggestion elsewhere, I reassigned the printer to our range, and it works.
