I'm about to buy an external hard drive and I'm seriously considering the LaCie 250GB "Porsche" designed drive (Firewire).

I love the simple style and lines of the unit but I've read mixed reviews online:

* No fan, so the drive gets hot

* Because of the lack of adequate cooling, users have reported losing their data

* Extremely loud/noisy

Can anyone confirm these findings? Or offer an alternative review? I figured if I asked true Mac users, I'd get a good opinion .

I've had the 250Gb version for a month. Compared to my iBook it is very noisy because of the tiny fan. It does have a fan, how else could it be noisy? Then again, compared to desktop computer it isn't that noisy. I'm not in the mood of writing a comprehensive review, so let's just say that I'm happy with my purchase. Never had any problems and I still have over 100Gb left which is great and I like how it beeps me when it's safe to shut it down after I unmount it from my Mac.

I have one and it's about as quiet as my Mac mini. Quiet, then I'm very happy with it.

It does NOT have a fan.

hard drives tend to spin. that is how they work. some give off a very high-pitched whine.
