My friend has a Fantom Drive 80GB firewire Hard Drive that is not mounting on any computer. I have tried to see if Disk Utility or DiskWarrior can recognize it, but they cannot. I have tried turning off/on plugging/unplugging etc. I've looked through the postings here but they are all about the computer problems assoc. with HD malfunctions and in this case my computer FW stuff is working fine, it is the drive that is problematic.

If anyone has any troubleshooting techniques for this problem please advise.

What does the Apple System Profiler say?

If it doesn't show up there, either, then your drive is, quite simply, broken.

DataRescue X might conceivably be the last software option to glean data from the drive - it's very unlikely to work, though.

the only option then would be to remove it from the Firewire enclosure and see if it works in another, or if you stick it directly in a machine. Note that this may void your warranty.

If that doesn't work, then it's off to professional data recovery firms, if the data is very valuable to you (but only then $$$)

I didn't try system profiler, thinking that if it didn't come up in disk utility then it wouldn't be there either, but when my friend brings the drive back I'll give it a shot if you think it may shed light on the situation.

The data is avery important to him, so he may end up going to the Computer Loft here in boston and have them do it. They quoted $100-150 for the diagnostic.

thanks
