I'm looking to buy a TV tuner card for my dual 1.8 G5. I was looking towards getting an Alchemy, but saw on the forums a bunch of cards that people have mentioned. What do you guys recommend? The main features I'm looking for are remote control, and the ability to setup record times in advance so I can record shows and burn them later.

Unfortunately, Mac consumer tuner card options are very limited. In fact, the only one I know of is the Alchemy card. Of course, there are also external options from El Gato, Pinnacle and Formac.

check out the Plextor ConvertX and Elgato's EyeTV 200. Both use the same software I believe, which allows you to 'timeshift' your stuff. Does everything TiVo will minus season passes.

The Alchemy card does that, if you are looking for a PCI card, it is OK.

I recently bought the AlchemyTV DVR PCI card from OWC. I've used it to digitize a few VHS tapes and record some tv shows and it seems to work fine. The main reason I purchased this card over the firewire/usb DVR devices was the price (about 1/2 the price of the alternatives). I've been told the video quality on the firewire/usb DVRs is better, but for my purposes the AlchemyTV seems fine.

I've had the AlchemyTV DVR card for a few months, and I've been pretty satisfied with it. It does everything you want. I chose it over the other solutions because it gives you the straight video. The EyeTV's compress the video themselves, and is useful for lower power systems, but I have the power to compress it myself, and the AlchemyTV gives you more options. The Alchemy card will compress to anything that Quicktime can compress to, EyeTV only does MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.
