First off, a huge thanks to everyone, especially f1000 and ericgibson74 for taking the time to give such good instructions.

After my 6th RAZR in 9 months died, Cingular (who has happily warranteed each one) offered me an LG CU500 to replace it. After finding this thread, I excitedly took them up on it. The LG's form factor seems a bit more crude, and the UI doesn't seem all that great, but if it will hold up for more than 6 weeks, I'm all about it.

Using Eric's instructions, I was able to tether and connect. Mac is a 15" PB G4 w/ 10.4.7. I'm seeing about 150k down and 25k up... I'm hoping it gets better.

As a non-technical user, my question is what to try first. I'm not sure if the RMAC instructions that were included early in the thread are still relevant- f1000, it sounds like you may be using a LG CU500 now as well- can you clue me in on what to work on?

I have followed your instructions to the letter and have had no success. Everything seems to go along fine, all the way up through the CHAP authentication. Then, for some unknown reason, I get a sudden SIGHUP. Here's a snippet of the log:

Am I missing something? This is very frustrating, as I got the phone solely for its ability to tether to the Mac. I have been able to browse with MediaNet from the phone, so the connection seems fine. The "ConfNak" reply packet looks very suspicious, since I suspect that's some sort of failure message.

ericgibson74 posts useful instructions and script earlier in this thread for tethering an internet connection through lg cu500 to a mac.
The script instructions are great but I had to change one thing in the script to make it work. The change solved authentication problems for me.

I changed isp.cingular to wap.cingular in the followiing script line 8:

just curious if everyone would continue posting info about cingular(now at&t) 3G networks in this thread or start a new one?

First off, I would like to thank everybody for all their generosity, time and effort towards tethering and giving it to Cingular! As much as I despise them, they're what I have.....

Anyhow, I've managed to tether using USB and Bluetooth using an LG CU500 phone. I've noticed that the Generic CID 3G script gives me the best speeds:

USB
3G1 Up - 1115kbps(139.4kb/s) Down - 320kbps(41.3kb/s)
3G2 Up - 1019kbps Down - 245kbps

Bluetooth
3G1 Up - 593kbps(74.1kb/s) Down - 141kbps(17.6kb/s)
3G2 Up - 595kbps(74.4kb/s) Down - 144kbps(18kb/s)

I should note that I live in the Portland, OR metro area where we enjoy 3G coverage. I can even sit on the train and get it. It's nice that way. I used Thomas
Cochran's web blog page to get me going on the USB side of things. I followed it to a T except I can't get the script he suggests to work. Instead, I'm using the Generic 3G 1 script, which seems to get the highest speeds. Oh yeah, I used WAP.CINGULAR as the number as well instead of the 99**1#.

Now if I could only figure out RMAC, I could probably tweak this faster. I might try Broadband Optimizer instead and see if I have any luck. RMAC won't save a start up file. Any suggestions? It just gives me an error.

I'm thinking about getting the V3xx with the "MEdia Max 200 Bundle w/Unlimited Mobile to Mobile Messaging" package. Some have suggested you would need to buy a laptop connect or blackberry tether package to get this to work otherwise you will be charged a fee per byte transferred to the laptop. I think someone else mentioned this will only happen if you use ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM instead of WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM. So I wanted to make sure that this was the case and I would not incur additional charges beyond those for Media Max package.

Also, the V3xx supports Bluetooth 2.0 which I believe supports transfer rates up 2.1 Mb/s. I would think that this should allow you to get the max transfer speeds for both EDGE and HSDPA over Bluetooth without the need to use USB for the max speeds. Do you think you could provide an update with information on what scripts to use for the V3xx with Bluetooth 2.0 and HSDPA to achieve the maximum possible transfer speeds?

I've not seen reports of anybody getting speeds over ~800kbit with Bluetooth. As with 802,11, overhead for protocol and signal loss probably mean that you'll never see 2.1mbit/s. Heck, current Macs all support Bluetooth 2.0, so if better performance were possible, I expect somebody would have seen it by now.

I think the 800 kbit limit is because of the peak speed of the network. Cingular for example states that their network will not do much better than 700 - 800 kb on average. The thing is, I'm not sure how this is possible to achieve that with DUN to a PC since Dialup Networks don't typically support speeds that fast even if the phone can do it. That's why I was looking for a PAN solution that wouldn't have that sort of limitation. However, through some more research I've found that pretty much the only Motorola phone that supports PAN is the Q. Many other smartphones like the Blackjack and Dash support PAN too. Hopefully this will change once the Juix phones start coming out. Beyond the phones not supporting PAN, the current Mac OS does not support PAN either. I've read it will not support PAN until the iPhone comes out. However, PAN has been supported on windows since Windows XP SP2 with improved support in Vista apparently.

No, 800 kbits isn't a network limitation. I've connected both by Bluetooth and by USB. I can regularly get 1200 kbits using a USB tether. I've seen Verizon connections as fast as 1800kbits. I have never seen more than 700 kbit via Bluetooth.

PAN isn't about performance, but about configurability. I don't believe there is any difference in how the phone accesses the outside network, only in how the phone allows the computer to connect to it. Even today, the phone isn't actually behaving all that much like a standard modem with respect to the cellular network.

After trying nearly every suggestion above, I finally succeeded using Ross Barkman's new Generic HSDPA Script (scroll down on this page: Ross Barkman's Home Page unzip and drag into Library/Modem Scripts)

Iti only worked for me using WAP.CINGULARGPRS.COM (as opposed to ISP) -- I'm on the unliminited MediaNet plan.

LG CU500v with iBook G4 and Belkin F8T01 USB Bluetooth 2.0 adapter (100 meters).

It's been a while, but i've upgraded my nokia 6682 EDGE to a nokia 6120 classic (white) 3.5 HSDPA phone. I decided to go with this phone because not only is it a 3.6Mbps hsdpa/384Kbps UL/DL umts, but it's also a class 32 edge phone which has faster download and upload speeds compaired to a class 10 edge when i'm not in 3.5G areas. I'm currently using bluetooth to connect since both my phone and macbook pro has bluetooth 2.0+EDR and i had to use the nokia hsdpa cid1 modem script from Ross Barkman's Home Page, although i do plan on in the future trying using usb connection since i've read it seems to be faster. Here are some of my speed test results via bluetooth:

Using 3.5G HSDPA networks,
Download Speed: 1007 kbps (125.9KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 279 kbps (34.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Using 2.5G EDGE Networks
Download Speed: 208 kbps (26KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 120 kbps (15 KB/sec transfer rate)

These speeds are pretty much average what i get except for the ocassional speed dip or speed burst. The only problem i have from time to time (which i didn't have before using the 6682 or my old sony ericsson t616 and the standard infrared nokia/sony ericsson modem script from mac osx) is when i'm downloading certain pages or multiple pages, even tho i don't loose my connection to the network, i seem to loose the connection to the server and the page stops downloading. After checking the connection manager on my phone, it verifies that no data is being sent or recieved during this time although it's still connected to the network (this happens if i'm using edge or 3g to connect). A simple disconnect and reconnect fixes this issue but i would like to fix it to where i didn't happen at all. If anyone has any ideas please let me know, i can only assume maybe it's something in the the modem script, otherwise all the options are unchecked (ecko packets, etc)

Hi, i've downloaded the same script, but I don't know how to set the phone.
Have you detailed information ?

My Mac has *99***CID# string in the number field and in the Remote Access I've set the apn of my carrier.
I'think thet i've problem with the phone configuration.

I'm having an interesting problem with DUN -

Bought and iPhone and deactivated the service on my old phone (a Sony Ericcson w810i).

Taking the iPhone sim out and putting it back into the w810, I can dial and get to Media.net with no problems.

However, DUN has stopped working. These are my network settings:

If Media.net had stopped working, I'd assume that data services just don't work any more with the new SIM.

Anyone have any ideas on what's going on?

My MacBook Pro too a dump last week and I've lost the settings for teathering my V3.

Since I also switched to a V9, was wondering if anyone has used this phone for 3/3.5G access on AT&T's network?

If you do, what are your settings?
