my external hd was unplugged without being ejected. Now when i plug it in i get inatlize, ignore, or eject. I have a crap load of important files on there. I was wondering if there were any free solution to getting my files back.

I used a demo of data rescue x but it was not really working out. i selected the hard drive to scan then selected a diffrent one to write to but it said that i am reading the same drive i am writing to. It pissed me off and if i did decide to use it I would have to shell out like 90 bucks.

please help i need these files back.

Get a copy of disk warrior from alsoft and it may be able to save everything. Disk warrior is something you want to have around as it can fix a lot of problems that can occur.

I grabbed a copy of that but it won't recognize the external hd. I can't figure out why.

Are you using firewire for the drive? What kind of computer are you using? If it's possible to put it inside another mac that might make the difference for discwarrior but I don't think that it will. It sounds as if data rescue wasn't able to access the drive which is why you got the errors. I would try using another computer if possible to rule out any problems with the computer you are using. I have never had diskwarrior not detect external drives as long as they are plugged in upon starting off the cd. Only time the drives weren't detected was when the firewire on my powerbook went out. Check the system profiler and see if the drives are seen there.

i have been getting help in this thread too here

i have a powerbook
data rescue let me scan once i used my ipod to write the file to. It said it forund like 606 files but none of them showed up to rescue.
data warrior only works with drives that are mounted (or so i hear)

since my last post on the other i have found a way to scan with data rescue by ignoring partitioning. so i am in the scanning proccess again. hope it works this time
